The role of the Advisory Division is to provide legal advice referred to it by the Government, including Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Cabinet, any Minister, Ministries, Departments and Government agencies as well as State Governments. The Attorney General's Chambers have placed legal officers as the Legal Advisor at the Ministries and Departments to provide legal advice on legal matters arising at the Ministries and Departments. Legal advice to the State Governments in Peninsular Malaysia is given by the legal officers who are placed at the States as the State Legal Advisor. Legal advice to Sabah State Government and Sarawak State Government is given by the Sabah Attorney General and Sarawak Attorney General, respectively.

The role of the Advisory Division is to provide legal advice referred to it by the Government, including Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Cabinet, any Minister, Ministries, Departments and Government agencies as well as State Governments. Clause (2) Article 145 of the Federal Constitution provides that it shall be the duty of the Attorney General to advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong or the Cabinet or any Minister upon such legal matters. Hence, the Attorney General's Chambers do not have the legal capacity to provide legal advice to the public on any matters.

The atmosphere and experience of working in the Advisory Division is the same as in other Government offices. However, the focus and practice of the officers in the Advisory Division is to provide legal advice on all areas of law (except international and Islamic law), interpretation of the law, drafting or reviewing legal documents such as legal notices, agreements and memorandums of understanding which the Government is a party of, to ensure that the interests of the Government are protected, conduct research on legal matters, advise on matters for which the Government intends to regulate and prepare draft bills on such matters, if any, to reflect policy decisions made by the Government and submit these draft bill to the Parliamentary Draftsman for her approval.

In this regard, officers in the Advisory Division are also directly involved in the negotiation of agreements with respect to Government projects especially privatization projects and information and communication technology projects to ensure the Government’s interest is protected at all times. The officers in the Advisory Division is also required to attend meetings at the invitation of other Government agencies to provide legal advice on matters discussed to ensure any decisions and the policies made by the Government is in accordance with the law.

Apart from providing legal advice, the Advisory Division is also responsible to review Government’s Procurement Agreement and Premise Lease Agreement referred to it by the Government. In this regard, the Advisory Division will ensure the review of the the said agreements will be carried out systematically, effectively, orderly and concisely in line with the requirement of MS ISO 9001:2015.
