The Solicitor General assists the Attorney General and may perform any of the duties and may exercise any of the powers of the Attorney General as provided under section 40A of the Eleventh Schedule to the Federal Constitution.

The Solicitor General shall have all powers of a Deputy Public Prosecutor and shall act as a Public Prosecutor in case of the absence or inability to act of the Attorney General. This is provided under subsection 376(2) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The Solicitor General oversees and monitors the Advisory Sector and Management Division in the Attorney General’s Chambers which consist of the Advisory Division, the International Affairs Division and the Research Division. The Solicitor General is also responsible for the supervision and monitoring of the Legal Officers and Legal Assistants in the Advisory Sector who are based in the States or branches of the Attorney General's Chambers, in cadre service in the Ministry/ Department/ Government Agency, seconded to a Statutory Body or placed temporarily at any Government Agency.
 
The Solicitor General is also responsible for the recruitment of the legal officers on a contractual basis, transfers and postings of the legal officers and carries out any other duties as directed by the Attorney General.
